The Illusionist (2006
– DVD) Set
in Vienna at the turn of the nineteenth/twentieth century,
this is a beautiful story, full of love, romance and,
yes, illusions. Gentle but firm, and very well acted.

The Prestige (2006 - DVD)
Film of the book by Christopher
Priest (see magic
fiction). Lots of magic, in a period London setting.
Quite nasty in places but gripping and you’ll
probably want to watch it again as soon as it’s
finished.

Magicians (2007 – DVD)
Comedians Mitchell and
Webb give us a story about a pair of conjurors and the
feud they get into. On paper, not too dissimilar from
The Prestige. In practice, a whole different world.
Surprisingly good.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation -
New York - Season 3 Part 2 Episode
18, Sleight Out of Hand, is the one with Criss Angel
as street magician Luke Blade. I like CSI anyway and
Criss is cool in it.

Columbo Less
gorily, Columbo brushes with magic a couple of times:
Now
You See Him – Season 5
Jack Cassidy plays The Great Santini, a magician with
a shady past, who thinks he has committed the perfect
murder.
Columbo
Goes to the Guillotine – Season 8
Anthony Andrews plays a phony psychic, who pulls off
an impressive feat of mentalism but fails to fool the
great detective.

Diagnosis Murder Not
gorily at all, Dr Mark Sloan investigates a murder at
a magic show. Dick van Dyke is a keen amateur magician,
as is the character he plays, and it’s all very
jolly. Magic comes up occasionally across the several
series but the one at the magic show is Murder with
Mirrors, series 1, episode 10.
Annoyingly, these DVDs
seem to be available only for Region 1, so far, but
maybe your DVD player can handle that.

Jonathan Creek Jonathan
Creek is fun as well. Starring Alan Davies as an inventor
of conjuror’s illusions and Caroline Quentin as
his journalist friend, it is a series of impossible
mysteries solved by magical thinking.
